Later edition, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT TO ARTHUR W. SAGER on the front flyleaf: "These stories deal with Americans who were not too proud to fight and who scorned peace without victory. Theodore Roosevelt Feb 17th to Arthur W. Sager." Roosevelt and Cabot Lodge collaborated on this collection for boys at the same time that Roosevelt was toiling on the fourth volume of The Winning of the West. Fourteen of the essays included here were written by Roosevelt; the remaining twelve are by Lodge.
