The Nasrid jewellers made a play of the contrast of enamelled panels against filigree and granulated gold areas as seen on the present buckle. The work on the present piece is very close to that of a series of belt ornaments in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Dodds, Jerrilynn D. (ed.): Al Andalus, the Art of Islamic Spain, New York, 1992, no.72, pp.302-3).
