Lot Essay

For the artist see, for instance, the catalogue of the exhibition, Battistello Caracciolo e il primo naturalismo a Napoli, Naples, 9 November 1991-19 January 1992, pp. 293-8.

We are grateful to Professor Riccardo Lattuada and Dr. Stefano Causa for confirming the attribution on the basis of a transparency. Dr. Causa points out that another depiction by the artist of the same subject is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Caen: formerly attributed to Caracciolo, this has been published by Dr. Causa as the work of Gerolamo de'Magistro (S. Causa, Un' aggiunta al Maestro del Gesù tra i dottori, Paragone, XLII, nos. 32-33 (505-507), March-May 1992, p. 40, note 6, pl. 31).
