Lot Essay

The present marble well-head, carved with a continuous scene of Bacchic putti, is reminiscent of the style of the Italian sculptor Cesare Lapini, who excelled in the portrayal of young children.

A similar well-head was sold Christie's London, 13 May 1999, lot 153 (£34,500).
