Lot Essay

See Tamara Préaud, The Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory, Alexandre Brongniart and the Triumph of Art and Industry, 1800-1847, Bard Exhibition Catalogue, New Haven, 1997, p. 173, for a watercolour and pencil on paper draftman's design for this work. Here it is suggested that the rendering might have been produced by Charles-Eloi Asselin. The entry also records a delivery to the Emperor on December 5, 1804 of seventy-two assiette unie with tortoise-shell ground, priced at fifty-four francs each - Registry Vbb 2, fol. 6v. It is likely that the present example was part of this order.
