The raised rectangular brèche d'alep marble top above a demi-lune shaped case, with a central panelled door applied with a garland-hung canopy above a dancing muse, supported by a pair of caryatids, opening to reveal four adjustable shelves, flanked by two bowed glazed panelled doors, each opening to reveal three glass shelves, on short cabriole legs and scrolled sabots, the lock stamped DUVIVIER/PARIS/77 FG. ST. ANTOINE/123

Lot Essay

A design for this bas-relief embellishment depicting Erato, the Muse of Poetry, was exhibited by Christofle at the 1878 Paris Exhibition Universelle, and is illustrated in the catalogue of the exhibition.

A similar vitrine, in the Transitional taste, sold Christie's London, 28 October 1993, lot 238 (£10,350).
