Lot Essay

Of Swiss birth, Marc Louis Benjamin Vautier (d. 1898) studied in Geneva and Düsseldorf, where he remained for much of his life. Examples of his work may be found in the Leipzig Museum, Berlin Nationalgalerie and various other public collections.

Marie-Adelaîde (1732-1800) was the much-portrayed third daughter of Louis XV.
