Lot Essay

The pattern of the parlour chair'’s shell-capped back relates to that of the celebrated George II Dublin-crafted 'Malahide' chair (G.A. Kenyon, The Irish Furniture at Malahide Castle, Dublin, 1994, pp. 92-93). Its stretcher-tied legs and hollowed brackets feature on another Dublin-crafted chair, with related fretted-vase splat, illustrated in J. Kirk, American Furniture and the British Tradition to 1830, New York, 1982, (fig. 922).
