Lot Essay

Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co's, The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, London, 1788 (pl. 37) popularised this elliptical form of 'cellaret' with 'brass hoops' and herm-legged stand. A related stand-supported cellaret, from Stoke Edith House, was sold at Russell, Baldwin & Bright's house sale, 27 May 1964, lot 184. The bacchic lion handle was fashionable around 1800; a related cellaret, with such lion handles, was formerly at Weston Corbett Place, Hampshire and sold by descent from the Heseltine family, in these Rooms, 5 June 1997, lot 172.
