A coastal landscape with frigates off the coast in a storm

This is a characteristic work by the artist, who is known to have returned to the same motifs in his oeuvre: compare, for instance, the picture signed and dated 1664 in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Brunswick (R. Klessmann, Die holländischen Gemälde, 1983, p. 21, no. 396, illustrated) and the signed picture offered at Lempertz, Cologne, 5 December 1998, lot 1008.
