Lot Essay

In an age where industry and mechanization were the rule of the day, Gorham brought the Arts & Craft movement to America through the introduction of Martelé which was completely handmade without the use of machines. The line was extremely expensive. Production of Martelé slowed after 1905 and between 1909-1912 fewer than one hundred pieces were produced.

This piece is listed in the Gorham Records as being made by Lars Darlin Monsen and chased by Ernest W. Regester. It took seventy hours of production and sixty-one hours of chasing, cost Gorham $260.00, and was completed on October 24, 1904 (as published in Larry Pristo, Martelé Gorham's Nouveau Art Silver, 2001, p. 313).
