Lot Essay

The present plate is from a service similarly decorated to one produced years earlier (1758) for the duc de Richelieu. A pair of compotiers 'ronds' from this earlier service are in the Forsyth Wickes Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Jeffrey Munger, The Forsyth Wickes Collection in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Boston, 1992, no. 124). From the service made in 1775, two compotiers 'oval' are in the British Museum (Aileen Dawson, French Porcelain, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection, London, 1994, no. 119), and a plate was recently sold (Collection Charles-Otto Ziessenis; Christie's Paris, 6 December 2001, lot 227). The sale of this plate was pre-empted by the Musée Nationale de la Céramique, Sèvres.
