Lot Essay

The plateau 'du roi' first appears in the present large size in sales records of 1755. It was sold as the basis for a déjeuner, the components of which vary with the size of the tray. Jampots are also found with this form as a stand. The plateau 'du roi' is often confused with the plateau 'long uni', another shaped oval tray but with lobed ends (lots 3, 32, 34) rather than the eight equidistant lobes resulting in a bow-shaped end as found on the present example and on the two smaller examples of the second size in this collection (lots 2, 68).
