Purple interlaced L's enclosing date letters LL for 1788, painter's mark for Buteux, gilder's mark for Boileau, the pentimento of the mark for Vincent visible beneath it
Painted with a wide band of cornflowers growing from the scalloped terrace alternate with a vase of flowers and a posy suspended from a ribbon, reserved on the turquoise band
4 3/8in. (11.1cm.) high

Lot Essay

Described in the sales records as Festons bleu céleste, several services in this pattern are known: a dessert service sold to the Paris dealers Empaytaz et Cie. between 10 October and 5 December 1794 (purported to be the one sold Sotheby's London, 17 March 1987, lot 120); another sold to the London dealer Enoch Rittener on 4 and 10 March 1987; and a part dinner service sold Christie's London, 3 December 1984, lot 22. A single plate from the collection of Charles-Otto Zieseniss was sold Christie's Paris, 6 December 2001, lot 22.
