Lot Essay

When Kensington and Knightsbridge were small communities, the toll gate here was the entrance to London from the west. In the 1820s Decimus Burton designed the Constitution Arch and Hyde Park Screen as imposing features of the drive from Buckingham Palace into the park. In the 1960s underpasses were constructed for pedestrian use and the corner has become a major roundabout.
