The building depicted is as it stands today. To the left of the Royal Exchange is the Bank of England and Threadneedle Street, to the right the Globe Insurance building.

Charles James Lauder painted landscapes and architectural subjects. He was the son of a portrait painter, studied in Glasgow, and began to exhibit as a member of the Royal Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street in 1890. Many of his subjects are found along the Thames.
