SAINT-SAENS, Charles Camille (1835-1921). Cabinet-size portrait photograph inscribed and signed ("C. Saint-Saens"), to Isidor Philipp ("Très cher ami"), n.p., 1908. 6 1/8 x 4 1/8 in., including mount with ink inscription, in French, in a giltwood frame. An expressive black and white image of the composer, standing with one hand resting on the back of an ornate chair, the other in his pocket, in full morning suit, with head slightly turned, gazing beyond the camera. -- SAINT-SAENS. Original landscape drawing in ink BOLDLY SIGNED ("C. Saint-Saens," with flourish), n.p., 1916. 6 x 8 in., oblong, in a fine decorative giltwood frame. An atmospheric drawing reminiscent of the Barbizon school, comprising a landscape with several trees and schrubs reflected in water in the foreground. Saint-Saens was a prolific composer, writing in almost every form, perhaps best- known for his biblical opera, Samson et Dalila (1877) and the Danse macabre (1874). A champion of instrumental music in France when it was extremely low in popular esteem, Saint-Saens became highly conservative in later years and strenuously opposed modern music. Together two items.
