8o (216 x 155 mm). Title within woodcut border, 2 folding woodcut maps (the first with 1 x 1½-inch loss affecting one wind-head figure, few separations and small holes, few repairs), folding table (few separations along fold, light dampstaining, few tears repaired on verso), folding woodcut diagram, woodcuts in text including musical notation, numerous woodcuts in text, including numerous full-page cuts, full-page printer's device on verso of final leaf. (Some occasional pale dampstaining and light soiling, occasional mostly pale foxing.) Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin (clasps defective, some wear and rubbing). Provenance: contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf and early inscription on front pastedown -- Paris College library (inscription on title) -- Moralasso Sacromento (inscription on title)
A celebrated encyclopaedia, encompassing all of the recognised branches of human knowledge, comprising the trivium, quadrivium, and the natural and moral sciences. The first world map is like that in the first edition (1503) with the 12 wind-heads. A second, more crudely rendered, world map appears to be an imitation of the important map of the 1515 edition, bearing the same title "Typus universalis terrae, iuxta modernorum distinctionem et extensionem per regna et provincias." The last copy of this edition to appear at auction was sold at Doerling, 11 June 1987. Adams R337; Sabin 69130.
