by Gabriel-Raoul Morel (fl. 1797-1832), marked, with the excise and third standard marks for gold Paris 1819-1838 and the French post-Revolutionary unofficial standard mark for 18-carat gold, the flange engraved with retailer's name 'Fossin Joaillier des Enfans de France rue de Richelieu N.o 78' and inventory number 714, the miniature French School, circa 1820-1824
Rectangular box with rounded corners, the cover centred by a glazed oval miniature depicting King Louis XVIII of France (1755-1824), facing right in blue uniform with gold epaulettes and gold buttons, decorated with the blue moiré sash and the silver breast-star of the Royal French Order of the Holy Ghost and another breast-star, the stars of the Royal French Orders of St Louis and the Legion of Honour suspended from a red ribbon tied at his left lapel, white stock and frilled cravat, white powdered hair and sideburns, within a gilt-metal mount cast with husks, the matted gold cover stamped with palmettes, honeysuckle-motifs and pine-cones, the panels on the sides and base similarly framed and engine-turned with wavy reeding, the corners of the sides stamped with fluted columns on a matted gold ground
