Octagonal heavy gold box, the slighty raised cover inset with a matted gold panel simulating suede chased with scrolling foliate Napoleonic initial 'N', within a narrow gold border stamped with stylized acanthus, the bevelled matted gold border stamped with a frieze of polished gold stylized palmettes and lotus flowers, the four sides and base with similarly framed panels engine-turned with a rhomboid pattern of dices, the corners of the sides stamped with classical vases on a matted gold ground

According to a French inscription engraved at the inside of the lid, presented by Emperor Napoleon I to the Count de Sainte-Hermine on 11 August 1808.
