A 15th century jewel casket of similar design belonged to the well-known designer A.W.N. Pugin (1812-1852), who inherited the casket from A.C. Pugin. Possibly A.W.N. Pugin designed the 19th century handle. After his death, his collection was sold and the casket was eventually bought by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. As the present lot is an exact copy of the 15th century example in London, including its later handle, it is said that A.W.N. Pugin himself ordered John Hardman & Co in Birmingham to execute the present casket. The firm of Hardman & Co executed most of the Pugin designs.
