A PALMYRENE LIMESTONE RELIEF
Circa Mid 2nd Century A.D.
From a large-scale funerary banquet relief, preserving the left end of the kline, once surmounted by the reclining deceased, the edge sculpted in shallow relief with four rectangular panels framing a reclining bull, a plain panel, a rosette, and tongues below acanthus, the turned and fluted leg on a tall plinth to the left, the scene between the legs (the right leg now-missing) with a date palm and fully-laden dromedary camel in profile to the right, an animal skin draped over the tall saddle, the coffer-patterned saddle cloth and saddle bags strapped to its body, the reins around its raised neck and the harness straps across its muzzle indicated, the tail curled, all on a plinth forming the base of the relief
