Half-title, with the final advertisement leaf. (Browned throughout). Contemporary sprinkled sheep, flat spine ruled in gilt (head of spine chipped).
First American edition of Barrington's colourful narrative. Known as the 'Prince of Pickpockets', he was sentenced at Newgate in 1790 to transportation to Australia. On the voyage he managed to prevent a mutiny by the other convicts and for this he was rewarded with a sum of money and manumission within two years of his arrival. He died an old man at Paramatta where for a long time he had been superintendent of the convicts. Brunet I, 668 (note); Ferguson 235; cf. Wantrup 25
