Lot Essay

Gerardus Cornelii was baptised in Nijmegen on the 7th of August 1695. He was the son of Dirk Cornelis and Celia Spronkers. Gerardus married Lydia Palm on the 18th of October 1722. Documents reveal that Cornelii worked for the local tailors' guild and the city government.
Amongst others he is known to have delivered silver for the burgomasters' hoods. Two candlesticks by Cornelii are in the collection of Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam (see: Molen, J.R. ter, op. cit., pp. 184-185).
