Details
A pair of Victorian silver candlesticks
Mark of Thomas Bradbury & Sons, Sheffield, 1840
Of chimney form, each on square and sloping stepped base, the stems with canted corners, chased with a brickwork effect, with crenellated upper rim, the bases each engraved with a coat-of-arms and motto, the reverse with an inscription, the bases filled, marked on footrim
9 3/8in. (23.5cm.) high
The arms are those of Vaughan quartering Nanney and others impaling Mostyn quartering others, for Sir Robert Williamses Vaughan 2nd Bt. (1768-1843) of Nannau Hall and his wife Anna Maria, daugher of Sir Roger Mostyn 5th Bt. (d.1796), whom he married in 1801.

Sir Robert was M.P. for Merioneth from 1792 to 1836. He had inherited the estates of Rûg and Hengwrt and Nannau from his father. A staunch Tory, he made no speeches in the House of Commons but attended regularly. In North Wales he was styled as 'The Golden Calf of Dolgellau as an agricultural improver and road-builder. Contemporary quotes in his entry in The History of Parliament, London, 1986, p.445 by Sydney Smith describe him in his letters as 'a sweet innocent', who
'...sees from his windows Cader Idris and Snowdon, both of them inferior to himself in height and bulk. It was curious and amusing to see the worthy baronet, surrounded by sixteen little men and women who reached up to the waistband of his breeches, and looked like iron rails round a monument.'

Although not a cultured man he was said by his mother to consult his Bible and Prayer Book daily. He was a generous host who entertained numerous guests who came daily to the house without any special invitation.

The inscriptions read, '1840 Model of the Chimney at the Archdeacon's House Bangor, see Shakspeare (sic) Henry Fourth Act 3, Scene 1'. (2)
