Partly-fluted cylindrical and with gadrooned borders and double lips, each engraved with two coats-of-arms accollée with duke's coronet above and further engraved with the initial S with Royal Duke's coronet above, marked on sides

The initial is that of H.R.H. Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex K.G. (1773-1843), 6th son of King George III (1760-1820).

The arms are those of Vane quartering the arms of King Charles II accollée with the arms of Vane quartering the arms of King Charles II impaling Russell for William, 1st Duke of Cleveland K.G. (1766-1842) and his second wife Elizabeth (d.1861), daughter of Robert Russell Esq., whom he married in 1813. (2)

Lot Essay

William Harry Vane (1766-1842) was styled Viscount Barnard. He attended Christ Church, Oxford, and as a Whig was Member of Parliament for Totnes, 1788-1790 and Winchelsea, 1790-1792, when he succeeded as Earl of Darlington. In 1827 he was created Marquis of Cleveland and six years later 1st Duke of the second creation. He was a renowned foxhunter and patron of the turf.
