Lot Essay
These extraordinary commodes, of remarkable form with six legs and three banks of shallow drawers continuing on every side, must have been conceived as a specific commission for a collector to house a particular collection of rare artefacts.
Another commode of this model, in a private collection in Paris, is illustrated in N. de Reyniés, Le Mobilier Domestique, Paris, 1987, vol. I, p. 658, fig. 2404, where he suggests that such a commode was intended for the storage of a collection of rare mineral specimens. Another pair of commodes of this model, possibly the same as that illustrated by de Reyniés, was illustrated by P. Kjellberg in 'Meubles de Rangement de Minéralogie', Connaissance des Arts, May 1967, p. 106. A further pair (possibly the pair offered here) was offered Sotheby's Monaco, 26 November 1979, lot 295, described as Régence.
