COUPLE D'ANCÊTRES BAOULE

Assis sur un tabouret traditionnel à découpe géométrique, les deux personnages sont de face, l'homme tenant la femme par le cou, les figurines ont des formes élancées couvertes d'une épaisse patine croûteuse sacrificielle laissant par endroits affleurer la veine brun clair du bois, la femme porte une coiffe à chignon pointu vertical et longues nattes tressées tombant sur la nuque, son visage large au front bombé est scarifié aux joues, les oreilles sont percées pour porter des ornements, les traits sont sereins, le regard baissé, le nez droit et fin, la bouche petite en carré, le visage de l'homme présente les mêmes traits bien que la face soit plus large, bordée d'un collier de barbe terminé au menton par une pendeloque, sa coiffe à large bandeau transversal et chignons trilobés est ornée en frontal d'une frise de triangles, le cou et le buste de la femme sont sculptés en relief de tatouages géométriques, dont une triple chaîne rejoignant l'abdomen à l'ombilic saillant, l'ornementation de l'homme est plus sobre, il porte en relief au cou un collier, et au buste deux cordons scapulaires, trois carrés décorent les reins, les extrémités sont fines et longues, les sexes bien marqués, au dos, des creux indiquent le sillon vertébral plongeant dans les fessiers rebondis
BAULE ANCESTOR COUPLE, IVORY COAST
Seated on a traditional stool, two figures face one another, the man holding the woman by the neck, both covered in a thick layer of sacrificial patina, The woman has a pointed chignon and long plaits falling at the nape, her broad face with domed forehead has scarification on the cheeks, the ears are pierced for earrings, the expression serene, with lowered eyes, three chains link the navel to the neck; the man has the same characteristics with a collar of beard terminating at the chin with a lock of hair, his headdress is three lobed, decorated with a frieze of triangles at the front. He wears a necklace, with two scapulas, three squares decorate the small of the back, with powerful buttocks.
This magnificent representation of a couple unites the major elements of Baule sculpture. The faces are sculpted like masks and confer an air of mystery and hierarchy which is unusual. The quality of the carving is extraordinary expressing serentiy and power. The sacrificial patina shows that this object was often honoured by sacrificial offerings of food.
According to Susan Mullin Vogel, Yale, 1997, p227, these figures may be the object of a cult belonging to a fortune teller. Rarely are these carved, as here in this example from the Bottet Collection, from a single piece of wood.
