Clay, Charles. First worked in Stockton and is recorded there in 1716, prior to moving to London where he had certainly arrived by 1736, working in the Strand and then St. James's. He died in 1740.

The hood with stepped and moulded caddy top with blind fret panels (partially re-built), with brass-capped columns flanking the door and glazed side panels, convex throat mouldings, the rectangular trunk door with moulded frame, the plinth raised on a stepped skirting and with later bun feet, the 12in. wide brass dial with engraved wheatear border and engraved foliate scrolls to the arch, female mask and foliate spandrels to silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour and cross half quarter hour markers, the matted centre with subsidiary silvered seconds ring and square date aperture with engraved chamfered border, blued steel hands (later minute), with silvered convex disc in the arch signed Charles Clay LONDON flanked by dolphin spandrels, the five pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell, with later seatboard
