FIRST TOUR OF AUSTRALIA, 1861-62 -- A one-page letter of 23 lines, 2° (12¾in; 33.2 x 20.9cm.), with integral blank, dated Melbourne, March 1862, from H.H. Stephenson, writing on behalf of the England Eleven to Spiers & Pond, thanking the firm "for the great kindness we have experienced at your hands during our residence in Australia .. our trip to the colonies has been the most agreeable one throughout. It has been your constant endeavour to do all in your power to promote our comfort & happiness, and at every place we have visited we have been received with the warmest friendship & most unbounded hospitality. We most especially desire to thank you for your liberality in giving us a benefit match prior to our departure ....' Unsigned but with superscription 'Private, Mr H. H. Stephenson Captain All England Eleven' on verso of second leaf; together with a 4pp. signed letter, 8° (7 x 4½in; 17.9 x 11.2cm), undated [but ? Sept., 1861], from Stephenson to an unnamed correspondent [presumably B.W. Mallam, Spier & Pond's representative in England], assuring him on behalf of the Eleven "how heartily we appreciate the trouble you have taken for us. In an undertaking like the present we were prepared for some difficulties, but we were not prepared for the generosity and care, which has smoothed them; and we shall leave England and return to it, with a sense of our great obligation to you, unabated ...."; and another unrelated letter to Stephenson, dated 9 June 1869, concerning investments.
