A RARE ENGLISH BASKET-HILTED BACKSWORD
Mid-17th Century
With tapering blade (some damage to cutting edge) double-edged towards the point and struck on the ricasso with a mark, a negro's head, with three long fullers on each side stamped between orbs and crosses with the inscriptions 'Soli Deo Gloria' and 'Andrea Farara', 'Irish' guard of slender bars involving incised saltires, fluted mushroom-shaped pommel, and later leather-covered wire-bound grip (scattered pitting on blade and hilt)

Lot Essay

The mark on the ricasso is that of Johannis Beugel of Solingen (recorded 1645-64)
