A FINE 16-BORE NEAPOLITAN SILVER-MOUNTED MIQUELET-LOCK PISTOL
Third quarter of the 18th Century
With two-stage barrel with chiselled girdle and a ring at the muzzle, on the top of the breech the mark of the royal manufactory of Naples (Neue Støckel 8672) between two gold-lined fleur-de-lys marks, long tang engraved with shells and scrolls, engraved and chiselled lock with fan-shaped fluting on the bridle to the cock and pan, the front of the steel chiselled in relief with a bird, carved walnut full stock inlaid with pierced silver panels cast and chased with shells and scrollwork in relief involving monster-heads and animals (including a Neapolitan mastiff), pierced side-plate with a bird at the front, later iron belt hook, pierced and engraved silver fore-end cap, and fluted iron spur trigger-guard retaining the barrel tang (ramrod missing, iron parts with some surface pitting, finger-pad removed)
