WILBUR KURTZ MEMO TO DAVID O. SELZNICK
1939
A nine page mimeographed, typed memo sent to producer David O. Selznick by the hired "GWTW" historian, Wilbur Kurtz, and two other members of his research team named Miller and Lewton. Dated March 17, 1939, the document outlines in specific and graphic detail how the Gettysburg Montage should be shot, including an appearance by General Lee and violent battle sequences. Interestingly, actual battle scenes were never filmed for "GWTW," though the Civil War itself was the major theme propelling the entire plot. This particular memo indicates that Selznick seriously considered adding battle sequences, though famously, they never came to be.
