A Bone Model Of The American Privateer ALEXANDER of 1800**
Anonymous; American, ca. 1812
A very fine bone model of this American privateer. The hull of the model is a wood plug which has been planked over in bone. The deck of the model is also planked in bone, and the planking on both the hull and the deck is held in place with brass pins which creates a pleasing pattern over the entire hull. The bulwarks of the model are built up in ivory, as are many of the other details of the model. The ivory details include: figurehead, anchor stocks, masts and spars, bowsprit, catheads, pin and fife rails, ships boat, hatch frames, ship's wheel skylights, chainplates, windlass, deadeyes and turning blocks, and other details. Some of the details are modeled in brass and the include the anchor stocks and cannon barrels. The model is rigged with three masts, standing and running rigging which include forestays, ratlines, backstays, topping lifts, bracing lines, hoisting lines and other rigging details. The model is displayed on a pair of custom cradles fashioned from brass. The model is displayed in a mahogany and glass case (later).
31¾ x 17¼ x 26½ in. (80.6 x 43.8 x 67.3 cm.) Cased dimensions.
