When the Porsche 356A was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the Autumn of 1955, the motoring press responded to it with a positive and strong reaction. In a 1955 article on the sporty new cars published in autocar the writers raved, to drive a Porsche is to experience a new form of motoring, so refreshingly different is it from the usual run of vehicles. The reaction was consistent across the board and the little cars gained themselves a loyal crowd of their own. Over the course of the next several years Porsche altered the body designs only minimally and rather than implement drastic body changes, they offered a variety of powerplant choices instead. Additionally, minor styling improvements like the one-piece windshield and deluxe wheel caps were also adopted and smoothed the car's overall look. The braking and suspension systems were also improved and gave the car a much smoother ride. The Speedster had Reutter built bodywork that was wind-cheating and aerodynamic. It featured a short chrome-brass windscreen, spartan interior and a range of engine options.

Confirmed by a letter from Porsche Cars North America, the stunning Speedster we offer today was completed on the first of March 1956 and was first delivered to the local Porsche distributor in Munich just twelve days later. Originally finished in Porsche color code 5607 (aquamarine blue), optional factory-fitted options were chrome-plated rims and coupe seats.

This highly delectable and evocative example of one of motoring's all-time landmarks has been restored to the finest detail and is now finished in stealth-like black coachwork contrasted by Speedster seats sheathed in red wine leather and a new black hood. Respected 356 specialists Honest Engine treated the 1600 Super power unit to a full rebuild and we are informed that it runs superbly and is very powerful indeed. The bodywork is unmarked and the panel fit is excellent, while the interior is unmarked throughout. Indeed, it is difficult to find any part of the car that might let it down, such is the attention to detail and the finish.

A rewarding driver's car, the 356 always was and remains to be a testament to the legendary Stuttgart marque. This particular matching numbers, aesthetically unflawed Speedster would, in our opinion, be a welcome competitor at a concours level, a rewarding drive or a collection centerpiece.
