1958 PORSCHE 356A 1600 SUPER CABRIOLET
Chassis No. 150368
Engine No. 81878
Light blue with red interior and black soft top
Engine: flat four, air cooled, two twin choke Zenith carburetors, 1,582cc, 75bhp at 4,500rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: front, independent with trailing arms, shock absorbers, torsion bars, rear, compensating leaf spring, torsion bars; Brakes: drums all round. Left hand drive.
The new Porsche Type 356 was launched at the 1949 Geneva Salon, the type number being the 356th project undertaken by the Stuttgart based Porsche design office since its formation in 1930. The new cars found immediate success in all forms of motorsport, which was reflected in sales. Launched in the fall of 1956, the 356A was an evolution of the original 356 and it displayed visual tweaks plus significant improvements to the chassis, body and running gear with particular attention paid to the fields of durability and driveability. An example of this was the addition of a new mounting for the forward end of the gearbox - previously the 356s had been susceptible to breaking these mountings thus more thorough rubber mounts were employed to give the engine and gearbox a more accommodating base.
Delivered on 27 May 1958, this American supplied 1600 Super-engined example was beautifully restored a few years ago to its original factory specification of Meissen (medium) blue with red leather to the interior. Noteworthy also is the fact that factory options of sealed-beam headlights, US specification over-riders and a Ponto-Stabil outer rearview mirror are still evident on the car today. The panelwork is exemplary and the paintwork is similarly flawless.
Boasting a hearty 75bhp, the engine has been fully rebuilt and is described as being in excellent order. We recommend potential new owners to look at the excellent quality of the engine compartment. The interior is delightfully complemented by German square weave carpets, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM stereo adds to its period feel. Widely praised for an equal balance of understeer and oversteer, the 356A is as rewarding for the driver as it is for the onlooker. This matching numbers example here today is a fine opportunity to purchase a first-rate representative of one of the last of the 356A breed.
