The figures are taken from the Venus and Cupid with a Lute Player of circa 1565-70, on canvas and measuring 157 x 205 cm., in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A slightly smaller, contemporaneous version of the New York picture, painted with studio assistance, is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
