This dressing-table was almost certainly embellished by the Dublin firm of Michael Butler, who specialised in embellishing and reproducing Irish 18th Century furniture (D. FitzGerald, 'Dublin Directories and Trade Labels', Furniture History, 1985, p. 262). The firm worked extensively for the 1st Earl of Iveagh (d. 1927) supplying him with much of the furniture for Elveden Hall, Norfolk, six marked pieces by Butler being included in the Elveden Hall house sale, Christie's, 21-24 May 1984.
A 'lady's dressing table' of this pattern, with plain tapering legs, was illustrated in Thomas Shearer's The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788. Shearer also named it 'A Rudd' in his 1797 edition, and named it after Margaret Caroline Rudd (d. 1779).
A related dressing-table was offered anonymously, in these Rooms, 14 September 2000, lot 21.
