Not content with up-staging his rival Enzo Ferrari through the introduction of the radical mid-engined Miura, Ferrucio Lamborghini was keen to produce a full four-seater supercar. Introduced at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show, the Espada was the embodiment of this desire. Styled by Marcello Gandini, it represented the fusion of two Bertone 'concept cars' the Muira based 'Marzel' (with its glass wing doors that showed too much of Mrs Lamborghini's legs!) and the Jaguar E-Type based 'Pirana'. The result was a low slung, menacing 'wedge' design that had enormous presence despite being no longer than a Ford Mustang. Its Giampaolo Dallara-designed pressed-steel platform chassis featured all round coil and wishbone suspension with Koni dampers, disc brakes and anti-rolls bars front and rear. The legendary quad-cam Bizzarini 3,929cc V12 was front-mounted and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox with weight distribution a near ideal 52-48 front to rear. The Espada subsequently offered genuine 160mph performance with surprising good handling and ride quality. Over ten years, 1,217 were built making it the best selling Lamborghini of its day.
This series two car has the higher compression of 10.7.1 and the more conventional dashboard layout. The bodywork is in very good condition throughout having an excellent panel fit and being corrosion free, with only one small scratch to the driver's door. The interior is finished in red, and has recently been re-trimmed with little or no use since.
The car has not run for many years, and Christie's would recommend that a full mechanical inspection be completed before the car has any extensive use. With minor re-commission this represents a rewarding high performance sports car for a modest outlay
