Muromachi period (14th-15th century)
The blade hirazukuri (flat sided) configuration with iori-mune (shallow-peaked back) and very slight torii-zori curvature; the forging pattern itame with mokume (wood grain) and the tempered edge narrow suguba (temper line parallel with the back of the blade); horimono (carving) futatsu no hi (parallel grooves) on the inside and marudome bohi (rounded-end groove) on the outside; the tip ko-maru (small and rounded) with a medium turnback; the tang unshortened with sujikai (angled) file marks and two peg holes; gilt copper habaki decorated with cat scratch patterns

With a wood storage scabbard with an attestation by Tanobe Michihiro who attributes this dagger to Yamamura of Echigo province and dates it to the Oei era (1394-1427)

Koshirae comprising a saya (scabbard) lacquered black and finished to resemble tree bark, the tip end lacquered in high relief to resemble a bronze sayajiri (tip hardware), the front applied with a shakudo and gilt fitting cast as a flowering bush, the kozuka shakudo and gilt with flaming jewels carved in sunken relief, with signature Noshu (Mino province) ju Kanenori; the tsuka (handle) mounted with fuchi-kashira carved with landscapes, the tsuba shibuichi with plovers over a stream, inlaid in shakudo and gold; 21in. (53.3cm.) long overall
