Baillie mentions two watchmakers named Bartels who were active in the early 19th century. One Hinrich Wilhelm, active in Ritzebüttel, 1821; and Wed. Bartels, active in Amsterdam 1822 - 1825.

It is most likely that this clock was made by Hinrich Wilhelm Bartels as the clock is also inscribed Preetz, a small town in Schleswig Holstein, more or less in the same region as Ritzebüttel, which is just above Hamburg. Curiously the movement has some typically Swiss features, such as the rack strike with ornate scroll and the graduated countwheel.
