A Large Thangka of One Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara
Tibet, 19th Century
Very finely painted with the central figure of Avalokiteshvara dressed in red, green and orange brocades standing on a lotus base emanating from a lake and encircled by his arms and a golden aureole, flanked by Manjushri at left and Vajrapani at right, with Amitabha and Tara depicted in their heavenly abodes at top centered by a group of three Gelugpa monks and various Buddhas floating in aureoles, the lower section depicting the protector deities Jambhala, Yama Dharmaraja, Six-armed Mahakala, Sridevi and Begste against a mountain landscape; mounted with blue silk brocade with ochre and purple borders
