A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, PRESENTED TO STANLEY BY DAVID LIVINGSTONE'S SISTER, JANET, the front blank inscribed in blue ink: 'Presented to Henry M. Stanley/by Miss Janet Livingstone/5th November 1872./Hamilton. Scotland.' A poignant gift from a deeply religious family following Stanley's visit to Hamilton in late October 1872. Perhaps in conversation with Janet, Stanley had emphasised his own ambitions to continue Livingstone's work.
