STANLEY'S LUGGAGE AND EXPEDITION BOX
A brown leather Gladstone style bag with applied hand written and printed traveling labels, one inscribed by Lady Stanley 'This Bag belongs to My Beloved Husband Henry Morton Stanley He took it to S. Africa in 1897 ... ... used it constantly ...up to the time of his death in 1903', and another inscribed 'Sir .H.M.S. 2 Richmond Terrace Whitehall London' in ink, with metal lock and handle rings. 18¼ x 9 x 9in. (462 x 228 x 228mm.); together with a small metal bound oak trunk with a bone 'Mappin & Webb' makers plaque, the remains of railway labels and bearing initials 'H.M.S' on either end and numbered no. '24'; and a further oak trunk for silver ware containing 3 trays and bearing a brass plaque inscribed H M Stanley Esq. The wooden trunk by Mappin and Webb is similar to those pictured by Rion on the Emin Pasha Expedition (see Lot 87) (3)
