'Shackleton was accompanied by six of his men to this dinner at which Capt. R.F. Scott presided. At one point Shackleton whispered to him that Brocklehurst had brought had brought home his amputated frost-bitten toe in a bottle... Scott said he was proud to have had a hand 'in rocking Shackleton's Antarctic cradle', at which Shackleton took offence and left immediately after the dinner.' (J. Piggott (ed.)
