A PART COTTON TEKKE CARPET
West Turkmenistan, mid 19th century
The shaded rust-red field with four columns of ten linked Tekke guls divided by linked minor octagonal guls, in a border of polychrome hooked octagons containing stellar flowerheads between kotchak and barber-pole stripes, a piled striped elem skirt at each end, one end with final ivory stellar flowerhead stripe, slight loss at each end, a couple of small old repairs, excellent pile

Lot Essay

The secondary gul used in this carpet is rare to find in a Tekke main carpet. This carpet is also unusual in the use of white cotton for the white areas in part of the carpet, which does not however continue for the whole length of the weaving.
