A 'Liber Amicorum' or book of friendship was used by the owner to collect tokens, for example drawings or watercolours, given or made by friends. Samuel Rudolphus van Nispen, born in Purmerend on 12 June 1733 started this 'Liber Amicorum'. From 1875 on the album was in the possession of Lodewijk van Toulon van der Koog, a great-grandson of the before mentioned Johan van Nispen, brother to the original owner. The contributions by Anton Mauve were made in the year 1875 and indicate that the artist may have been a friend of Lodewijk. This album has always remained in private hands and was passed down from the original owner who had started it in 1750, to the present owner.
