PLANCK, Max Karl Ernst Ludwig. Sliverprint cabinet photograph of Planck, inscribed to Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943). Berlin, Transocean ca 1927.

163 x 118 mm. Mounted on gray backing sheet (slightly oxidised along edges). INSCRIBED BY PLANCK on mount: "Seinem lieben verehrten Collegen P. Zeeman zur freundlichen Erinnerung and den 27. und 28. Mai 1927 von M. Planck."

A very fine shoulder length portrait photograph of the creator of the quantum theory of energy distribution (1900), which revolutionized 20th-century physics. Planck presented this photograph to Dutch physicist and Nobel Laureate Pieter Zeeman, whose discovery of the Zeeman effect (polarization of spectral lines by a magnetic field) provided important experimental confirmation of quantum mechanics.
