The establishment of the Solvay Conferences was a milestone for international physics; many luminaries met for the first time due to Ernest Solvay's initiative. The conferences, to which only about 30 elite scientists were invited, were each devoted to a separate field of physics. The first (1911) concerned radiation theory and the quanta, the second (1913) the structure of matter, the third (1921) atoms and electrons, the fourth (1924) the electrical conductivity of metals, the fifth (1927) electrons and photons, the sixth (1930) magnetism, and the seventh (1933) on the structure and properties of atomic nuclei. At the fifth conference the famous Bohr-Einstein dialogue on the foundations of quantum mechanics begain.
