GREENE, Graham. The Comedians. London: The Bodley Head, 1966.
8o. Original green cloth; pictorial dust jacket. Provenance: R.K. Narayan (b.1906), Indian novelist (presentation inscription).
FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY GREENE TO HIS FRIEND, THE INDIAN NOVELIST, R.K. NARAYAN on the front free endpaper: "For Narayan with love from Graham Christmas 1965."
Greene greatly admired the Indian novelist R.K. Narayan and helped publish his works in Britain. One remarkable fact about their relationship is that Greene and Narayan met only once, briefly, in London in 1964. Their friendship began in 1934 when Greene happened to come across a manuscript of Narayan's Swami and Friends. Greene was impressed and passed it on to Hamish Hamilton. He also began a correspondence with Narayan that lasted until his death.
The Comedians is Greene's farce set in Port-au-Prince Haiti, under the dictatorship of Papa Doc Duvalier. Wobbe A48a.
